The Food Bank for Westchester distributes fresh food directly to the community through three programs:
The Senior Grocery Program distributes fresh foods to senior centers and programs where seniors congregate. These foods are provided as cooked meals or groceries to take home. Because many seniors are vulnerable to nutrition deficiencies when fresh foods are scarce or unavailable because of cost or other reasons, the goal is to provide nutritious produce and dairy foods to seniors at risk of hunger.
The Rapid Distribution Program distributes truckload quantities of fresh foods at various sites around the county, thus overcoming the barrier of lack of or inadequate cold storage. Programs that would otherwise have to forego these nutritious foods are able to provide them to their clients.
The Kraft Mobile Food Pantry, launched in February 2013, brings a "market on wheels" to underserved communities. The 36-foot beverage-style truck has refrigeration and freezer units so that fresh, nutritious foods can be delivered directly to those who need it. The goal is to provide a variety of nutritious foods including fresh produce, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, and healthy grains.
